Reno update

I've been meaning to do this reno update for a while now, but Blogger was being a pain and wouldn't let me post pictures. Today, for some reason, it works.

My blurry pic of the fireplace and my "uh-oh" moment. That moment when you begin to think you may have made a terrible mistake.

And then you finish painting and sigh with relief that it all worked out in the end.

Notice the white made the walls look even pinker??

Gone are the pink walls. We have painted them a different color.

I'm waiting until everything is finished to show the big reveal, because to be honest, with this new color (which is darker), it needs certain things to balance it out. It's hard to explain without giving away too much.

I will admit I sort of miss the brightness of the pinkish walls, but I'm pretty happy with the new color we picked.

This little clue is all I'm going to give you

This light is finally going away. It took a while for us to get to the point of replacing it, because technically, there's nothing wrong with it. It works, and it gives a good breeze when the fan is on.

But it's from the 80's and you know me. I just don't like extremely outdated things in a room because (depending on what it is), it tends to outdate the ENTIRE room.

And then there's Max's room, who finally has a carpet!

He has a carpet, but he still needs a bed frame.

We have been collecting these squares that are $5 a piece and we needed thirty of them. It was taking us forever to get there.

And then all of a sudden, we got a $700 credit from Home Depot for....who knows?  We think it may have been for the mistake they made on our flooring but that was four years ago.

Anyway, it came at a good time and we were able to get all the materials needed for Max's new floor.

And finally, the carpet!

And soon, we are finishing up the dining room project this week so we can celebrate Lucy and Henry's birthdays this coming weekend.

And here I thought we wouldn't be doing any projects this winter...

Max's Room--update

Max asked me since his room is painted and "decorated" (in his opinion), added a door, and I've added a bookcase, if it is now considered "finished". Oh, Max. It is far from finished.

But we're making some progress.

I know these pictures are nothing to brag about. I know about the mess and the clutter on the floor. I can only do a little at a time when it comes to his room, because it's so small with so little space to put things.

My camera does not like this lighting!

We added a string of flags of different countries to use as decoration. This was Max's idea. I thought it was a good one and I was glad to make it a little more personalized to his interests. Plus, it didn't cost much!

And yes, I added a bookcase with lots of little cubbys to put things in. It was a relief to clear off his dresser and put some of this stuff away!

All of this was previously scattered across his room or on his dresser. Religious items mixed with books and toys and no where to put things. This little bookcase was only $20 at Walmart (they are made to be stackable--you can add more bookcases onto it to make one bit bookcase. I'm considering it!)

So, no, we're not done with his room yet. We still need more shelves and/or bookcases for some organization. A carpet. A doorknob. The usual.

Tilll next time.

Max's Room--finally

Max's room is not actually finished, but I finally got the painting done. AND we got a door!

It doesn't have a doorknob, but it's a door!
Max's old door. Or what was left of it.

Here is Max's room from a few months ago:

Remember the weird stripe thing I had on the wall? Well, that is why it took me forever to paint his room. His walls are textured and so it made painting that stripe (I put two of them on) extremely hard. Even after all that work, it still managed to leak down the wall and didn't turn out really well.

But if you stand back and squint your eyes, it looks alright!
(I have never been a perfectionist.)

I know, I know. You're looking at these white walls and two stripes and thinking that it shouldn't have take two months to paint. But it did! (Plus, I ran out of white paint.)

I had to wait for the stripes to dry in between coats. And then I had to paint over them again, and then let them dry. And then take off the tape and retape and do the next stripe and start the process all over again. And then there were just days where I just couldn't get to it...

He loves the history of Presidents too. I found this poster at Hobby Lobby.

Max had wanted green and purple for his colors. I couldn't do green and purple, it was just too dark. Plus, he chose a really dark green (but pretty!) So we made a compromise to have white balance it out and do purple accents (coming soon!)

He wants a "flag room." He's really been into World History lately and has taken an interest in all the flags of different countries. So I ordered some flags off of Amazon and we're going to hang them as a border around the room.

So his room is far from finished but I feel like it's finally starting to shape up a little. He was so excited about his door!

Some furnishing to help him be more organized comes next, and of course a bed frame and carpet. You see, it is far from over.

But, it's a good start.

Max's room (Mostly just pictures)

Max's room is a disaster. I don't even know where to start.

For one thing, there is clutter everywhere and no where to put it.

His bookcase collapsed under all the weight

I cleared a spot so you could see it's a desk.

His door fell off its hinges. That happened a long time ago. At night, Max would simply prop his door against the frame to block out light. (Dennis didn't want it thrown out because he said he could fix it.)

Then not long after that, the door frame fell off the wall. Just like that. While we were cleaning out his room, right on cue, the door frame gave up and died.

So I told Max to take the frame and the door to the fire pit. Things that die get burned around here.

The door before...

...and after
His desk is next if it keeps looking the way it does.

The frustrating thing is that there isn't much we can do with Max's room right now. Obviously a new door is next on the list, but for now, I offered to paint Max's room. I asked him what colors he would like and he said, "Green and purple!"

Really? Those are like the two hardest colors to work with.

He really wanted dark green and dark purple, because lavender is too "girly." But it would make for a very dark room, so I think I have a plan.

I'm going to make these two ^^^ walls green (plus the one with the desk and dresser) and the other two walls white. I'm going to put a green stripe running across the wall for a hopefully "cool" and "teenage boy" look. We'll see.

His closet door died too.

The green stripe

If this doesn't make any sense to you yet, that's ok. I like to surprise people.

This will be a (loooong) work in progress.
